A Day Out to Shelburne Falls: The Hatfield, MA Way

Are you looking for some fun day trips in Massachusetts? You’re in the right place. Shelburne Falls is a delight along the Mohawk Trail in the western part of this beautiful state. It’s small, easy to explore, and full of natural and artistic attractions that make it easily worth the visit. If you’re staying in Hatfield or around the Pioneer Valley, this unique destination adds a refreshing spark to your itinerary.

So what exactly is Shelburne Falls? It’s a historic and quaint village near the Deerfield River. What is there to do here? Stick around and find out.

Getting There

While you’re staying in Hatfield, start your day off right with breakfast at The Old Mill Cafe, conveniently located in The Old Mill Inn. Enjoy breakfast items such as house-baked scones and pastries, local bagels, parfaits, and more. From there, hop on I-91 North and connect to Route 2 West, also known as the Mohawk Trail.

The Mohawk Trail is a scenic journey itself (especially during the fall), and is also an efficient way to get to Shelburne Falls in under an hour. There’s street parking options close to the center of the village, so you shouldn’t have any issues finding a spot.

THE BRIDGE OF FLOWERS

Believe it or not, the Bridge of Flowers is exactly as it sounds: a former trolley bridge completely lined with seasonal blooms. Volunteers from all over meticulously maintain it, with the display changing as the season evolves. It’s open from April to October and is free to access.

Giving you grand views of the river and surrounding foothills, it’s not just a photo op (don’t let that stop you from bringing your camera though). In the early morning, there’s something almost meditative about strolling across it. Even if gardens aren’t really your thing, this one has a way of stopping you in your tracks.

GLACIAL POTHOLES

Another standout in Shelburne Falls are the glacial potholes in the riverbed below Salmon Falls. These ancient formations, carved from retreating glaciers, look like something out of a science museum. You can view them from an observation area, taking in all of their beauty. Like snowflakes, no two potholes are the same. Some are shallow and polished, while others are deep enough to look like a natural bathtub.

grab lunch and browse

Once you’ve crossed the bridge and have checked out the river, you’ll need a bite to eat. There’s a handful of small cafes and restaurants in the village. Expect to find sandwich shops, pizza houses, and some fancy coffee shops. Not sure what to eat? Check out Shelburne Falls’ website for a full list of dining options.

After your bellies are full, spend some time walking through all the local shops and galleries. Shelburne Falls has a strong art community, with several studios showcasing local and regional works. You’ll find handmade goods, bookstores, boutique shops, and so much more.

OPTIONAL: AFTERNOON HIKE OR DRIVE

Depending on your schedule, if you’re not in a rush to head back to Hatfield, extend your day with a short hike or nice drive. High Ledges Wildlife Sanctuary is nearby and is a moderately easy trail with the best views of wild flowers, wildlife, and glimpses of the valley below. Or if you prefer to stay in your car, continue driving along the Mohawk Trail. The scenic drive has plenty of surprises around each bend, including the Hail to the Sunrise statue.

HEAD BACK TO HATFIELD

By late afternoon, things will start to wind down in Shelburne Falls, making it the best time to head on back to Hatfield, MA. Grab a coffee on the road and enjoy your quiet ride back to The Old Mill Inn, situated right near the Mill River. Hatfield is a gorgeous New England town in itself, with a strong variety of activities to choose from. We’re just far enough away from the buzz to relax and recharge at the end of each day.
